Lifeguarding Classes at the YMCA of Superior California

Whether you are looking for a great summer job or a career as a professional lifeguard, the YMCA of Superior California Lifeguard program is the place to begin! Through classroom activities, group discussion, online e-learning, and hands-on practice, you’ll learn the skills you need to work as a lifeguard.

Our comprehensive Lifeguard Training course includes accident prevention, lifeguarding techniques, emergency systems, and rescue skills. The course will also include CPR for the Professional Rescuer with AED, and First Aid

Certification Requirements:

To receive Lifeguard Certification a participant must:

  • Attend 100% of all class sessions
  • Arrive on time for all class sessions
  • Participate 100% in all class sessions
  • Pass written and skills test
    • Swim,Tread,Swim - Participants must swim 150 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing, then go into an immediate water tread using only their legs, then immediately back into a 50 yard swim continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing . Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
  • Demonstrate maturity, respect, and responsibility regardless of passing written and skill test

Refund Policy

  • 7+ days before class - Full refund minus $25 processing fee.

  • 2 - 7 days before class - 50% of the registration cost.

  • 0-48 hours before class - No refunds.

The only exception is a refund for special situations, including an injury, illness, or a family-related emergency where you cannot complete the class. A refund for the class will be issued if the YMCA has to cancel due to low enrollment.

There are NO refunds for people who do not pass the course, show up late to class, are dismissed due to poor performance, do not complete the e-learning, or fail the pre-course swim assessment. 

If you fail the final scenarios or the second written test, you may then re-enroll at 1/2 the cost of regular registration*
